Dharma

"She's very odd," Arden said after Camila shut the door.

Jack snorted as he sat down at Ivan's computer desk. He booted up the system and grabbed his bag. "That's odd coming from you."

I took in a deep breath. I had my emotions vaguely under control enough to stop crying like a blithering idiot. Arden hadn't been wrong in her assessment of what happened to me. Combine my Undine's excited state, then finding Ivan gone after he and I had our first argument and the terrifying thought that whatever this is that we didn't understand could kill him and I lost it. Hadn't lost control like that in a long time and I wasn't proud I'd done it that time.

But now, listening to Arden and Jack talk, a surreal sense of normality returned and I could focus on finding Ivan.

"Eh…not really. I'm actually pretty normal. Same as Dharma there. You and Ivan? Not so much." She wiped her hands on a towel and tossed it into the sink. "Why did you bring Carvella over?"

"Camila," Jack corrected. "She's a hacker. And a good one. She also knows about this side of the dark mirror and wasn't freaked out when I told her about Ivan and the code in his head."

"You did what?" Arden rushed at Jack as I came up off the couch.

Our reactions startled him and for an instant, I thought I saw the wolf in him show through. He growled.

"Uh uh. No fur, please. I'll give you points for the dark mirror description because I'll use that myself," Arden pointed a finger at him. "But telling other people about Ivan is a blatant do not do."

"What were you thinking?" I said this as I moved up on the couch with my knees and faced the two of them.

"Look, I can't do this by myself. I really need Ivan to help me, but the code we're trying to eradicate is the code that's making him sick. I need someone that thinks like a hacker. I worked with her at the FBI. She's good. She's trustworthy. And she understood exactly what I was talking about the first time." He looked at the two of us. "Just give her a chance, okay?"

"Did she have any ideas?" I asked.

"She did. But I'll need a new out of the box computer and server to implement the idea. So while you two find Ivan, I will write the rough program and do a few tests on it."

"I can buy you what you need," Arden said as she came to the couch and sat beside me. "Just tell me how much you need."

"Thanks, Arden. Oh, and when you find him, call Kyle. He should know what's happening." Jack buried his face in the screen.

I turned back around and sat straight as Arden turned to face me. "I'm ready."

"Do you have your lake set up?"

"You mean that thin level of water I was taught to surround myself with?"

"Yes. Only you will need to extend it—" She stopped, blinked and got up.
